You don’t have to spend a fortune but the computer and audio equipment should be of high enough quality to enable professional results.
We selected a small room, tall ceilings (10 ft), and very echoey (is that a word?). Designing where things would be placed reduced the risk of buying the wrong stuff.
And this is what the result looks like (a sound isolation recording booth that didn’t cost a fortune):
Now if I could only eliminate my slightly Southern accent!
